Living is in the Giving

As I drove down the road, this thought came storming into my mind. I could not write down anything. It has stuck with me all day. I hope it will bless you.

Living is in the Giving

There is a great sense of sheer joy when you have an opportunity to give something of yourself or substance to something or someone outside of yourself.

Many a stingy soul has cheated themselves out of one of the greatest pleasures available to us as eternal souls. Giving is the act of relinquishing something of value or virtue into the life of someone who has no obligation or expectation to return the giving.

You see this understanding of giving is demonstrated in all of humanity. This is by no means reserved to those who are Christians. The world is full of generous souls. For some, being philanthropic has been a way around surrendering their lives to God, and would rather sip on the elixir of charity, rather than take into themselves the blessing of surrendering their lives to God. One does not negate another. My point, giving is not just a Christian act. Every Christian should be a living, giving soul, but not all giving, living souls are Christians.

When someone takes you to court and sues you for your coat, you give them your shirt. Why? Because what warms your heart is not found in a coat or cloak, but the warmth of knowing you did the right thing. There is a temptation to allow the wrongs of others to cause us to allow the chill of bitterness to grip our minds and through this we lose the benefit of doing what is right.

When someone slaps you on the cheek, turn the other cheek. Why? Because the violence the flows from another heart should not staunch the flow of charity and mercy that is the essence of the spirit of Christ we claim. We must not allow the harsh cruelty of others steal from us what has given us our new identity in Christ. Without mercy, who are we anyway?

When someone has wronged us in some atrocious way, forgive them. Why? Because Jesus taught that the only way we can drink the cup of forgiveness of the Father is for us to be willing to pour that forgiveness upon those who have not even asked for it. The example is in Christ as he hung dying on a tree. He looked at those who had wronged, abused and had done all the things that would kill him and prayed a simple prayer, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Often when we are hurt by others, it is not through malicious malice, but rather self serving actions that by cause and effect hurt others. Jesus recognized this when he said, “...for they know not what they do.” He in effect gave them the benefit of the doubt. Did they deny him? Did they curse him? Did they beat him? Did they reject him? Did they blaspheme him? The answer to all of these is yes. However, he did not judge them based on what they did, rather sought their release of forgiveness because of his motives.

We judge ourselves based on our intentions, while we judge others based on their actions and that is not always a complete picture of what is going on.

So? Living is in the Giving.

The other day we were at a restaurant and received very poor service. My food was wrong, no refills, long wait, ect, ect. The waitress was just horrible. Someone eating with us asked my wife if I had tipped them and I heard her respond, “If they give bad service, he is likely to tip them real good.” I only use this to illustrate a concept I try to live with.

Generosity and a giving heart is not just what we do at a church, but what we do in and with our lives. I have not lived long, but I have lived just long enough to understand that I can be a thermostat instead of a thermometer. I can do nothing to dictate what others do or say, but I can dictate my actions and responses to others. This flows from me, but it comes from what I have been given. Grace, Mercy, Long-suffering and Love do not originate with me and I don’t desire it to end with me. I deeply seek that I could be conduit for the work of God to flow through me.

This is a philosophy I am seeking to implement in my life. I believe that this will help me to live and enjoy the days I have been given.

Because the Living is in the Giving. In

The Eternal Alternative

I had someone ask me the other day an interesting and intriguing
question. They asked me, what happens when something that you felt was
the will of God falls apart, and now you are faced with finding an
alternative.

My gut feel was that God always works things out, one way or the other.
Today sitting in my car, I began to think of situations in the Bible
that strayed from the original plan.

Judas betrayed Jesus, but he was replaced with Mattheus and Paul. Two
took his place it seems, one was chosen by lot, the next was chosen by
God. Judas fell, and when he did we find Paul, the greatest of the
Apostles came on the scene.

Eli and His sons failed God in their execution of the Job of being
Priest. Because of this we find a young boy named Samuel. Samuel, who
was the most pivotal priests in the History of Israel, was simply a
replacement of the original plan. Eli's sons died destitute of morals
and honor. Samuel lived and executed the office of not only a Priest
but also a Prophet.

Israel rejects Samuel to Rule, and want a king. The result is Saul.
Saul, whom God handpicked, failed God. And in this tragic twist of
rebellion and sin, we find that God had a Replacement. His replacement
for Saul was David. And it can be stated that David was the greatest of
all the Kings of Israel until Christ.

Cain killed Abel. The man of the earth killed his brother that offered
a pure sacrifice. But the purpose of God moved on anyway. Seth was
born, and the alternative plan of God still moved forward.

The world falls into deep decay of depravity. And God decides to
destroy the World. The world that God at one time created and looked at
and said was GOOD, drowned in the flood of the judgement of God. But
God's plan stays afloat in an Ark made of wood, constructed by a man
named Noah.

No matter how far man falls, God has an alternative plan in place. The
devil cannot thwart the plan of God, no matter how hard he tries. We
may find ourselves the victim of circumstance. Things get beyond our
control, but where there is God there is a way, and he has a plan. We
can look at the Beginning and see that God has a plan that will carry
through to the very end.

Adam, Eve living in Eden. God looked at all of this and said, "It is
very Good!" You could say, the will of God had been done, and God
literally created all of it just how he wanted it. But something
happened, Adam did a bad job keeping the garden, and let the serpent
in. Eve did a bad job of obeying God. Adam again did a bad job by
eating the fruit. The paradise God had created became place of great
destruction. The fabric of the fellowship that God had with man was
stained beyond recognition. A breach, a gulf had been created.

The solution and alternative? Jesus

We can not hog tie our lives because things did not work out. We can
not mope in the region of regret, valley of vacillation, we must quit
looking at the crossroads of yesterday wondering what would have
happened if we would have taken a left instead of right.

If things have turned out sour, don't sit around and say you must drink
it because it's in your cup.

Some things we cannot swallow. We must not stay captive to a change
that was beyond our control.

Look at the children of Israel that were in Egypt. There came a King
that didn't know Joseph. And began to persecute and harass them. It
was time to pack their trash and leave. "But God brought us to Egypt."
Yes but he didn't bring you there to stay.

Even Joseph knew that Egypt was temporary. He told them, "Take my bones
with you." When God said it was time to leave he did not even want to
leave the memory of his carcass.

God's plan is a dynamic thing. It is not carved in Stone. It is
dynamic. The Word of God does not change. The principles of God do not
change, but sometimes God operates in special circumstance, because
things have began to operate outside of his realm and his plan.

That is where we get Seth, Samuel, Saul, Paul, David, and the list goes
on and on. God always has a plan, an alternative plan.

In football, the rules never change. But the plays do. You don't run
the ball to the right every time, and you don't blitz every time. It's
dynamic. You Gauge your opponent and make changes accordingly.

If you got sacked, don't stay down, GET BACK UP. Rejoice not against me
OH my enemy, for when I fall I shall arise.

He may be shutting down the running game. Well it's not time for a Hail
Marry, it's time for a OHH JESUS.

And when Jesus steps on the playing field, the chips may be down, but
they are on the winning side. Because Heads or Tails, Jesus wins.

With God there is always 4 aces in his deck. And he is always holding
all the aces. He does not, can not, and will not lose. AND if you will
just stay on his team, and let him help you, You can not lose.

Oh weeping may endure for a season. But we win.

Cain killed Abel, but Seth was born.
Judas hung himself, but Saul became Paul.
Eli and his sons died, but Samuel was ready.
The World Drowned in the Flood, but Noah floated on the Ark.

Adam fell, but Christ Arose!
Adam died, but Christ is alive!
Adam was defeated, Christ was victorious!

For every plan of mice and men, there is a plan of God.
For every mistake of men and mice, there is a correction.
For every problem, God has a solution.
For every tragedy, There is a triumph.

It seems that his alternative is better than the original.

It's New, It's Improved, It's Supernatural.

Don't worry about the problems of Yesterday, Jesus has a Solution for
today.

I may not know how, I may not know when, BUT HE WILL DO It AGAIN.

GOD HAS AN ETERNAL ALTERNATIVE~!

We enjoyed a great day! We had a dynamic Sunday School lesson led by our Assitant Pastor Micheal Smith on Evangelism. The worship service that followed was kissed by the presence of God. Sis. Gayle testified about how God creates our lives like an artist paints a picture. Layer upon layer of different colors, and when it completed, God will frame it and we will see a picture of Gods' beatiful grace.

Bro. Clifford Odoms led the service and encouraged worship and praise to God. Sis. Becky Phillips beautifully sang, "Daystar."

Pastor Scott Phillips preached a message, "Will you bow now?"

There was an incredible touch of God at the conclusion.

Outreach Blitz

On Saturday we were so blessed to have the youth group from Parkway Pentecostal Church to come and help us pass out doorhangers. We had a total of 29 people in about two hours passed out over 1,700 fliers promoting youth ministry and Sunday School.

On Sunday 2.4.07 We had a good weekend.

Pastor preached, "The High Call of Prayer".

At the Close of the Service, Pastor shared with the church what the Lord had spoke to him that morning in prayer. "I was praying and the Lord Spoke to me, "I have given you bread and shoes." At the same moment he saw a pair of beautiful shoes and a loaf of fresh bread. Bread is symbolic of Daily Provision, and the shoes are the miraculous provision we see in the days ahead. We never really appreciate to fullness what God is doing until at some point the Lord Points it out, like when the Lord spoke the The children of Isreal and pointed out that thier clothes and shoes had not waxed old.

There was an incredible witness in the spirit, and we all worshipped in the Glory of God.

On Wednesday Night, continuing the Series of the Keys to a Successful life.

'Reflecting the kingdom of God':

New Birth gives life to multicultural congregation

Clinton house of worship among only 7 percent in U.S. with such diversity

CLINTON — As Pentecostal young women, Pricilla Hillery and Shaina Roberts dress modestly in long skirts and have figured out creative ways to pin up their long hair.

But the two friends come to their faith from different worlds - one black, one white - that rarely worship together.

"It's easier with a mixed group," Hillery said after services at New Birth Pentecostal Church, a small congregation west of Jackson. "We balance each other out."

Founded three years ago, New Birth has accomplished something many churches hope for but few achieve: a fully integrated congregation. Blacks and whites worship in equal numbers in this church formed to unite Christians of any race.

"Sunday is the most segregated day of the week," New Birth assistant pastor the Rev. Michael Smith said. "No one would have a multicultural church by accident."

Smith, who is black, joined New Birth after reading a newspaper advertisement announcing a new Pentecostal church in Clinton.

He didn't know - or care - that the man who placed the ad was white.

But when he met church founder the Rev. Scott Phillips, Smith enthusiastically joined Phillips' quest to build a multicultural congregation.

"I knew that the church should reflect the kingdom of God," Smith said. "The kingdom of God is made up of not only black and white people, but all nations."

Racially mixed churches are rare. A recent study based at Rice University in Houston found only 7 percent of American congregations are multiracial, which means no racial group makes up 80 percent or more of worshippers.

The study found that multiracial churches are usually found in racially diverse neighborhoods, and church members are more likely to have good friends of a different race.

New Birth is located in a building built by volunteers on Springridge Drive in Clinton. The U.S. Census estimates the city is 74 percent white and 22 percent black.

Several miles away in Jackson, Voice of Calvary Church has maintained an integrated congregation for three decades.

Most of its members live around the west Jackson church and have formed enduring friendships across racial lines.

"It's especially important for me to be part of an interracial community," said Voice of Calvary member Lee Harper, a black business owner. "It's the reason I became a Christian, after I saw Voice of Calvary and the work they were doing."

Several factors contribute to a successfully integrated church. Multicultural leadership is one. Intentionally building a mixed congregation is another.

"It doesn't require extra effort to reach for whatever your culture is," said Phillips, New Birth's pastor.

Phillips, 37, and Smith, 36, share pastoral duties at New Birth, where Smith leads weekly Bible lessons, and Phillips delivers the sermon.

But the pair are more friends than co-pastors, sharing meals in each other's homes and going out for Mexican food with their families after church.

Both are bivocational pastors. Phillips builds houses. Smith owns a Jackson barber shop.

Each says their shared vision for creating a racially mixed congregation stems from their Pentecostal tradition.

From the start of the Pentecostal movement more than a century ago, the faith appealed both to blacks and whites.

In fact, early Pentecostals envisioned a unifying faith that made no distinction between race. But Pentecostal denominations that formed later, such as the majority-white Assemblies of God and the predominantly black Church of God in Christ, organized along racial lines.

Still, Pentecostals have worked in recent years to integrate their leadership. And some Pentecostal churches are among the most racially diverse congregations.

Two dozen worshippers gathered at New Birth on a recent rainy Sunday.

Blacks and whites shared hugs, sang praise and knelt shoulder to shoulder at the altar in prayer.

Asked about race, church members echoed Smith's words about how the kingdom of God should reflect a racially mixed society.

Clifford Odoms drives 40 minutes from his Canton home to attend New Birth.

Raised in a black Baptist church, the 40-year-old Nissan worker said he was attracted to New Birth because the people there want to move beyond racial barriers that divide society.

"I really believe if we as the people of God don't set the example that we should love everybody, how can we expect the world to?" he said.

Barbara Keaton joined New Birth nearly a year ago, after moving to Clinton to live closer to her daughter, who is married to church pastor Phillips.

The 64-year-old retired homemaker attended the First Pentecostal Church in Jackson for close to three decades before joining New Birth.

"It's the same spirit," she said about her new church. "I feel the Lord the same."

NewBirth Revival

We had an incredible Revival of Faith with Evangelist Robert Tisdale. During these two services, on Monday Night we had an incredible move of the Spirit of God. Bro. Cedric recieved the Baptism of the Holy Ghost for the first time. It was incredible to see him blessed in the most awesome way. Watching him get the Holy Ghost, I got it all over again.

This Revival provided a spark from heaven to propell us into this New Year with a special hope for Harvest and Miracles.
